How to price a photograph

Photography prices differently from paintings because editions, not surfaces, drive the market. Two prints of the same image at the same size can be priced 4× apart depending on edition size and certification. Here's how the math works.
The edition decides almost everything
Edition size is the single biggest price variable in photography. An open edition (unlimited prints) is essentially valueless on the secondary market. Editions of 25–50 sit in the accessible band — € 200–€ 800 per print for emerging photographers. Editions of 5–10 price 3–5× higher per print. Editions of 1–3 ("AP" or "unique") can command € 3000–€ 15000 per print at the emerging level, because each one is functionally a single work.
Print method and paper
Inkjet (giclée) on cotton rag is the current standard for editioned art photography — defensible, archival, and widely accepted. Silver gelatin (darkroom-printed) commands a 30–50% premium because of the labour and the canonical association. C-prints sit between. Cheap inkjet on resin-coated paper signals "decorative" rather than "collectible" and should be reserved for open editions or studio prints, never for the formal edition.
Size bands that work
Three sizes carry most photography sales. Small (under 30 × 40 cm) — fast at fairs, often editioned at 25+, prices € 150–€ 450 emerging. Medium (around 50 × 70 cm) — the dominant collector size for editions of 8–15, prices € 600–€ 1800 emerging. Large (over 100 × 150 cm) — reserved for editions of 3–7, prices € 2500–€ 8000 emerging. Larger prints in larger editions break market convention and look like decoration, not art.
The certificate is part of the work
For photography more than any other medium, the Certificate of Authenticity is not paperwork — it is the work's identity. A signed, numbered COA naming the edition size, print method, paper, and date is what separates a € 1200 collectible from a € 120 reproduction. Without one, you're selling a poster. We cover what a real COA contains in the dedicated guide.

For an emerging photographer with a credible CV, editions of 8–15 at 50 × 70 cm typically price € 600–€ 1800. Editions of 3–5 at the same size price € 2000–€ 5000. The number is driven by edition size more than by the image itself.
